The Penguin is set weeks after the events of The Batman and it chronicles the titular villain’s rise to power. This series will see the Penguin build a formidable reputation in the Gotham underworld, becoming one of the most prominent villains in the Batman universe.
The first teaser sees Farrell’s Penguin recalling the story of an old gangster from his childhood, that he looked up to as a kid.
“When I was 14 or something, he has a heart attack and dies, still holding a cigar. In my neighborhood, they throw a parade in his honor. A friggin’ parade. It wasn’t fancy, but it was a gesture, a show of love, of what he meant. Can you imagine to be remembered like that?” says Farrell.
In addition to Farrell in the lead role, this limited series will also star Cristin Milioti as Carmine Falcone’s daughter Sofia, Michael Zegen as her brother Alberto, and Clancy Brown as Gotham’s former top gangster Salvatore Maroni.
The Penguin will feature eight, episodes, set to premiere on Max later this year.
Directed by Kogonada and penned by The Menu writer Seth Reiss, A Big Bold Beautiful Journey has been described as “an imaginative tale of two strangers and the unbelievable journey that connects them.” Plot details are being kept under wraps, but we know that the production will kick off in California this spring.
Dan Friedkin, Bradley Thomas, and Ryan Friedkin are producing the film for Imperative Entertainment, alongside Reiss and Youree Henley. Kogonada is coming on board as executive producer, along with Ilene Feldman and Original Films’ Ori Eisen.
A Big Bold Beautiful Journey marks Robbie’s first major film role after the global success of Barbie, which is currently in the running for eight Academy Awards, including best picture. As for Farrell, this marks his second collaboration with Kogonada following After Yang, and he’s currently attached to the Apple TV+ series Sugar and Max’s Batman spin-off The Penguin.
