The power couple joined the streaming giant through their Higher Ground Productions company and will helm all sort of content. The two will be going behind the camera to create and produce “a diverse mix of content, including the potential for scripted series, unscripted series, docu-series, documentaries and features,” according to Netflix.
Michelle and Barack are equally excited about their new venture with Netflix.
“One of the simple joys of our time in public service was getting to meet so many fascinating people from all walks of life, and to help them share their experiences with a wider audience,” Obama said in a statement. “That’s why Michelle and I are so excited to partner with Netflix—we hope to cultivate and curate the talented, inspiring, creative voices who are able to promote greater empathy and understanding between peoples, and help them share their stories with the entire world.”
The excitement of standing behind meaningful content was echoed in Michelle’s statement.
“Barack and I have always believed in the power of storytelling to inspire us, to make us think differently about the world around us, and to help us open our minds and hearts to others,” she said. “Netflix’s unparalleled service is a natural fit for the kinds of stories we want to share, and we look forward to starting this exciting new partnership.”
Ted Sarandos, chief content officer of Netflix said in a statement, “Barack and Michelle Obama are among the world’s most respected and highly recognized public figures and are uniquely positioned to discover and highlight stories of people who make a difference in their communities and strive to change the world for the better. We are incredibly proud they have chosen to make Netflix the home for their formidable storytelling abilities.”
Welcome on board Obamas!
]]>54-year-old Michelle took to social media Sunday to announce the news that she will be releasing a memoir, titled Becoming, during 2018.
Michelle wrote, “writing Becoming has been a deeply personal experience. It has allowed me, for the very first time, the space to honestly reflect on the unexpected trajectory of my life. In this book, I talk about my roots and how a little girl from the South Side of Chicago found her voice and developed the strength to use it to empower others. I hope my journey inspires readers to find the courage to become whoever they aspire to be. I can’t wait to share my story.”
In a statement by her publisher Penguin Random House made to People, the memoir is described as “an unusually intimate reckoning from a woman of soul and substance who has steadily defied expectations — and whose story inspires us to do the same.”
This won’t be Michelle first book; in 2012 she published the book American Grown to promote healthy eating in America.
Just last year the 44th POTUS and his leading lady inked an agreement with Penguin Random House that according to some reports is believed to be worth more than $65 million.
]]>“I think what happened to my mum probably put me a step back, thinking, ‘How could someone who did so much for the world, and did so much for everyone else, be treated like that by a certain institution?'” Prince Harry, as a guest speaker, said. “It takes a bit of getting used to, but once you understand the privileged position that you’re in, you then got to spend the rest of your life earning that privilege and giving back. And also gaining the trust and respect of the general public, and using the position for good.”
His mother Princess Diana, who was famously known as the “People’s Princess”, continues to be a major inspiration for the 33-year-old royal.
“I think she had a lot in common with everybody but also she certainly listened in a very, very short space of time,” Prince Harry said. “In society we suffer from this illusion or this reality where some problems get so big that nobody wants to get involved. She was the one that changed that. I will always look up to her as being my ideal role model because everything she did, and the way she did it, was having an impact, was making a difference.”
The prince also noted how the charitable work of the royal family is a true commitment.
“Because of the position that we’re in … you’re not in it for four years, eight years — you’re in it for life,” he explained. “Therefore everything we can do, we have a bigger, longer platform than politicians.”
“In today’s world, you have to be involved with things that make sense to where your passions lie, rather than show up to a charity once a year,” he continued. “I don’t think that’s beneficial to anybody.”
Earlier that day, Prince Harry and former first lady Michelle Obama went to Hyde Park Academy, a high school across from the future site of the Obama Presidential Center on the city’s South Side.
“Mrs. Obama and Prince Harry surprised approximately 20 students at Hyde Park Academy, a high school across from the future site of the Obama Presidential Center on the South Side of Chicago,” said Caroline Adler Morales, Obama’s Communications Director, in a statement.
According to a press release, “More than a building or a museum, the Obama Foundation will be a living, working center for civic engagement. The Foundation believes in every person’s ability to create positive change in their local community or anywhere in the world.”
“The Foundation’s initiatives inspire and empower people with the skills and tools they need to do just that—to change their world—and train and connect the next generation of civic leaders and active citizens. During this two-day immersive event, five hundred plus rising and established community leaders will come together to exchange ideas, explore creative solutions to common problems, and experience civic art, technology, and music from around the world.”
