The network confirmed Saturday that The Walking Dead will be back for an 11th season. The announcement comes just a day before season 10 of the series premiered. 

In addition, Lauren Cohan will return as a series regular, portraying Maggie Greene, in the 11th season.

“It’s amazing to be on a show that has run this long. It’s such a blessing. It’s such a testament to all the people who worked on it and made it happen, and the fans who come along the journey with us,” said show runner Angela Kang. “We’re always trying to think, as we’re working on stories, where this might go in the future. So, we are always thinking a season or two ahead, but just loosely like more in terms of what’s a part of this person? And how might they change over time? And sometimes those plans change along the way, but it just it gives us opportunity to just really think in a deeper way about where some of these plot lines that we’re working on now are going. That’s really a great thing for creative process.”

According to the network’s official release, this brand new series will focus on “the first generation to come-of-age in the apocalypse as we know it.” It will follow two young female protagonists, but it’s unclear if we already met them.

David Madden, president of programming for AMC Networks and AMC Studios, believes this spin-off will excite passionate fans of the original series since it’s going to explore many uncharted territories.

“We’re thrilled that the Dead will keep walking into a new corner of the post-apocalyptic world, a corner that will present stories and characters unlike any that The Walking Dead has dramatized thus far,” said Madden in an official statement.

Matt Negrete, who has been a writer and producer on The Walking Dead, will serve as showrunner of this exciting spin-off. Production of the show, which is set for a 2020 premiere, will kick off later this year in Virginia.

The Hollywood Reporter was first to report that Gurira, who joined AMC’s zombie drama is Season 3, will most likely exit the show in Season 10. The outlet further reports that Gurira aka Michonne has signed a deal to return for her final season of the hit drama. Her return, however, will be in a limited capacity, starring in a handful of episodes throughout Season 10. 

Gurira’s exit will follow Andrew Lincoln and Lauren Cohan both left the series earlier in Season 9. Lincoln will, however, star in the series of The Walking Dead TV movies, productions that Gurira is likely to join. 

“It’s not the beginning of the end, it’s the end of the beginning,” said Lincoln in a statement at the time. “And I like the idea that we get to tell a bigger story, maybe with a sort of wider vista. And I’ve always been interested in what’s going on out there, you know, whether or not there is contact with the wider world. I want to know the meta of it all. And I suppose to be able to kind of touch upon that in a contained story for me is a very exciting proposition… Maybe it’s the start of a bigger story.”

Gurira’s other credits include last year’s Black Panther. She also a Tony-nominated playwright.

According to recent reports, Lincoln will come back for at least three of the upcoming feature-length films. They are envisioned as a continuation of Grimes’ adventure, but he’ll be separated from the group featured on the original series this time around.

Lincoln announced his departure from the show a few months ago, and fans of The Walking Dead feared his character won’t make it out alive. That didn’t happen and Grimes’ story came to a pretty ambiguous conclusion, but it turns out it wasn’t the end of the road.

Showrunner of the original series Scott M. Gimple will be in charge of writing new spin-off films. He believes they can break new ground with different and distinct stories that are a part of the same exciting universe.

“We have a lot on the horizon – starting with a new epic featuring one of the greatest leading actors in television history and one of the best people I’ve ever met,” concluded Gimple.

The full list of nominees was announced on Wednesday, and Drake led the way in the music categories with a total of seven nominations. He will be competing for Best Male Artist, Best Album, Best Song and Best Music Video.

“God’s Plan”, “In My Feelings” and “Walk It Talk It” all received a nomination for best song of 2018, so he’s mostly running against himself. Cardi B came in second, with five nominations.

When it comes to movies, Marvel proved its domination once again. Two of the superhero flicks from this studio walked away with seven nominations each. Those movies are Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War. They’ll both be competing for the coveted Best Movie award against each other.

When it comes to TV, The Walking Dead is an absolute favorite. It received a total of eight nominations, including Best Show and Best Drama Show. It will have strong competition in medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, which revived six nominations.

This year sees the addition of 13 new categories, related to pop culture and social media. Voting will close on September 14 and top five nominees in each category will move to the next round. The finalist voting window will start on September 24 and run through October 19. The ceremony will take place on November 11, so make sure to cast your vote if you want to see your favorite star walking away with a shiny statue.

EW confirms Ryan Hurst has joined the upcoming season of the zombie drama for a recurring role. 

Hurst, who’s best known for his role on FX’s Sons of Anarchy, will star in the recurring role of the villainous Beta. According to the outlet, Beta serves as the lieutenant of the Whisperers, a group of survivors who thrive in the apocalypse as they go undetected thanks to the use of suits of walker flesh.

Hurst’s character will play opposite new series regular Samantha Morton who stars as Alpha, the group’s leader. 

The Walking Dead returns to AMC on October 7.

The Fantastic Beasts and Into the Badlands stars have just landed roles on season nine of The Walking Dead.

While Fogler’s role has yet to be confirmed, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Matsuura will play Yumiko, a survivor of the zombie apocalypse who is part of a group that encounters the Alexandria Safe-Zone some years after All-Out War. 

The duo’s casting follows the casting of Tony nominee Lauren Ridloff, who’s set to play Connie, “a seasoned survivor deft at using her senses to read people, situations, and trouble.” Conies as Ridloff herself “is deaf and uses American Sign Language (ASL) to communicate.”

Season nine will see the departure of two series regulars: Lauren Cohan and Andrew Lincoln.

AMC’s announced Saturday that their post-apocalyptic horror series has been renewed for a 9th season. However, these are not the only big news coming from the network: Angela Kang, who served as a writer on the show since 2011 and executive producer since 2013, has been named the series’ new show runner.

The announcement was made by current show runner Scott Gimple, who is moving up the ladder to become Chief Content Officer.

“I am beyond thrilled to be stepping into this new role with The Walking Dead,” Kang said in statement. “Working on this series and having the opportunity to adapt Robert Kirkman’s amazing comic has been a fangirl dream come true for me.”

Charlie Collier, president of AMC, SundanceTV and AMC Studios, said in his statement, “This is an enormously important day for the entire The Walking Dead television universe. We are proud to acknowledge Angela’s significant contribution to the series and to set a clear path forward for a ninth season under her direction.  Further, with gratitude and admiration, we also recognize Scott’s broad impact on, and leadership of, the content that fuels our TWD universe. Together, we will dream bigger and more broadly than ever before.”

Gimple, as CCO will oversee the entire Dead universe including TWD, Fear the Walking Dead, and possible other extensions on other platforms.
