The Way of Water is now the sixth highest-grossing movie of all time, and it’s joining the ranks as Avatar, Avengers: Endgame, Titanic, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and Avengers: Infinity War as only the sixth movie in history to ever earn more than $2 billion worldwide.

It’s not a shocker to see The Way of Water reach this impressive number since it set many major box office milestones following its release on December 16, 2022. It became the highest-grossing movie of 2022, with the third largest opening during the pandemic era behind Marvel’s Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

The Way of Water has grossed $597.9 million domestically so far, but its performance overseas is even more impressive, with $1.426 billion earned outside of North America. It crossed the $2 billion mark in just 37 days, becoming the second-fastest movie to reach the milestone behind Avengers: Endgame.

It has been confirmed that 41-year-old Winslet will star in the sequels, the first of which, Avatar 2, opens in December 2020. This first sequel will end the director’s long hiatus and will bring together the Oscar-winning duo after a lengthy 23 years since Titanic. The third movie of the franchise will open on December 2022, followed by a three-year break for Avatar 4. The forth and last sequel will then debut on December 2025.

Cameron began filming the first of the four Fox movies last week in California. The original Avatar fantasy epic released in 2009, remains the all-time worldwide box office champion with $2.8 billion.

“Kate and I have been looking for something to do together for 20 years, since our collaboration on Titanic, which was one of the most rewarding of my career,” Cameron, 63, said. “I can’t wait to see her bring the character of Ronal to life.”

Cameron recently made the announcement at a private event, saying, “As meaningful as she was to gender and action stars everywhere back then, it’s going to make a huge statement to have that seasoned warrior that she’s become return.”

The 63-year-old producer is making a statement again on gender roles in action films.

“There are 50-year-old, 60-year-old guys out there killing bad guys,” he said, referring to aging male actors still anchoring movies, “but there isn’t an example of that for women.”

Tim Miller, who made his feature-film debut with Deadpool, is directing the sequel, which is returning to its origin by having Cameron involved for the first time since 1991’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

The new film is based on a story created by Cameron and he will be producing together with Skydance, which will be distributed by Paramount and Fox for international release. Cameron and Miller are treating the movie as a direct sequel to Judgment Day and the themes of potential evils of technology will once again be at the fore. The project will also have a new generation of characters.

“We’re starting a search for an 18-something woman to be the new centerpiece of the new story,” Cameron revealed. “We still fold time. We will have characters from the future and the present. There will be mostly new characters, but we’ll have Arnold and Linda’s characters to anchor it.”

During an interview with ET’s Ash Crossan in August, Cameron discussed the future of Terminator franchise and how much the modern era of drones and artificial intelligence will mold the time-jumping, apocalyptic world.

“We have to ask ourselves some fundamental questions: Is there something that can be said in this Terminator universe that hasn’t been said – and is relevant to the world we’re in right now?” the Oscar-winning director said. “There’s so much in our world that’s catching up to Terminator. We have killer robots, they’re called unpiloted combat drones … we’re on the cusp of artificial intelligence that could be equal of a human intelligence.”

He added, “So we got to start asking ourselves what that means for our existence as a society and for our own sense of meaning.”

Cameron said things could get pretty bleak when it comes to dramatizing Terminator with that lens.

“This is where fiction comes in,” he shared. “It allows us to explore different possibilities, so obviously if we were to explore it in a Terminator, the context is all going to be very negative.”

However, this becomes increasingly complicated as wife Helen discovers what her husband really does for a living and is eager to join the adventure. The film was the third highest-grossing movie of 1994 — banking $378.9 million worldwide — behind The Lion King and Forrest Gump, and Curtis won the Golden Globe for Best Actress (Musical or Comedy).

Marc Guggenheim will be writing the script for the pilot, as Cameron is signed on as executive producer. The pilot is being produced by Wonderland and Lightstorm in association with 20th Century Fox TV.

“I’m not saying I didn’t like the movie but, to me, it’s a step backwards,” he explained, comparing the heroine to his Terminator’s female character Sarah Connor.

“Sarah Connor was not a beauty icon,” he shared. “She was strong, she was troubled, she was a terrible mother, and she earned the respect of the audience through pure grit. And to me, [the benefit of characters like Sarah] is so obvious. I mean, half the audience is female!”

According to ET, Jenkins is presently in negotiations to direct the sequel of Wonder Woman, which is set to release on Dec. 13, 2019. Since the release of the DC Comics and Warner Bros. movie in June, the blockbuster has been breaking records and is now the highest grossing live-action film ever directed by a woman.
