The Regime will take us within the walls of the palace of a modern European regime, and chronicle what’s happening behind the scenes as this authoritarian system begins to unravel. Winslet will lead the series in the role of a ruthless Chancellor, whose position is threatened by domestic turmoil.

The star-studded ensemble of The Regime also includes Andrea Riseborough, Matthias Schoenaerts, Martha Plimpton, Guillaume Gallienne, Hugh Grant, Danny Webb, David Bamber, Henry Goodman, and Stanley Townsend.

In addition to playing the lead roles, Winslet is coming on board as one of the executive producers, alongside Frank Rich and Tracey Seaward. Saoirse Ronan has recently wrapped up filming the adaptation of the classic novel Little Women, directed by Greta Gerwig. They previously collaborated on the set of Lady Bird, and Ronan received her third Oscar nod for playing the titular role.

This promising movie tells the story of a terminally ill mother who’s suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. She decides to pursue euthanasia and wants to bring her family together for one last time before her death. Her daughters have a hard time handling the situation and their encounter brings old conflicts to the surface.

Keaton will play the role of the mother, and Winslet and Wasikowska will star as her daughters. Roger Michell, of Notting Hill fame, will serve as director of the film. His most recent credits include My Cousin Rachel starring Rachel Weisz, and Le Week-End with Lindsay Duncan and Jim Broadbent in the leads. The script will be panned by the original movie’s screenwriter Christian Torpe.

Shooting is set to start this August in London, just in time for the three stars to clear their busy schedules. Keaton is currently shooting comedy Poms, while Winslet was busy working on the Avatar sequel, which will reunite her with Titanic director James Cameron. Wasikowska’s upcoming projects include female-directed dramas Judy and Punch and Bergman Island.

This first sequel will end the director’s long hiatus and will bring together the Oscar-winning duo after a lengthy 23 years since Titanic. The third movie of the franchise will open on December 2022, followed by a three-year break for Avatar 4. The forth and last sequel will then debut on December 2025.

Cameron began filming the first of the four Fox movies last week in California. The original Avatar fantasy epic released in 2009, remains the all-time worldwide box office champion with $2.8 billion.

“Kate and I have been looking for something to do together for 20 years, since our collaboration on Titanic, which was one of the most rewarding of my career,” Cameron, 63, said. “I can’t wait to see her bring the character of Ronal to life.”
