It’s fair to assume that the series isn’t returning for season 3 due to low ratings. Per The Hollywood Reporter, season one averaged 164,000 live-same-day viewers, with that number slipping to 93,000 in season two. In addition to that, it had mixed reviews among critics, with an 88 percent score among viewers on Rotten Tomatoes.
Sweetbitter was based on the book of the same name by Stephanie Danler. It followed a 22-year-old woman (Ella Purnell) who after arriving in New York, landed a job at a posh downtown restaurant.

According to Variety, which was first to report the news, the sequel will start a decade after the events of the original, against the backdrop of the current climate of more widespread marijuana legalization.
“We’re thrilled to be back in business with series star and executive producer Mary-Louise Parker on what we’re calling ‘Weeds 4.20,’ already in active development at Starz, as we prepare a comprehensive and integrated rollout for one of television’s most beloved properties,” said Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer.
The sequel, which hails from Victoria Morrow, who wrote and co-executive produced the original, will star original star Mary-Louise Parker.

It follows the adventures of Catherine of Aragon, as she struggles to adapt to English customs after her arranged marriage to Arthur Tudor. After his death, she goes on to marry his younger brother Henry VIII.
Showrunners and executive producers Emma Frost and Matthew Graham released an official statement after the show’s renewal and thanked Starz for giving them an opportunity to give this story an ending it deserves.
“We are thrilled to tell the next chapter of Catherine of Aragon’s story as she negotiates war, politics and marriage to the most dangerous King of England. As a company that always produces compelling and dynamic projects, Starz has been a great creative partner and we look forward to concluding Catherine’s journey with them.”

Starz COO Jeffrey Hirsch was excited to announce the renewal and had nothing but words of praise for the creative team behind it. “It is a rarity in television today to have a series earn this level of critical praise for two consecutive seasons and spark cultural conversation in the way that Vida has. We are proud to continue to tell this story with Tanya and the incredible cast and crew she has assembled,” he said in a statement.

“It’s been an absolute dream for this team … we got to make exactly the show we wanted to … perfect cast, perfect crew on two continents … and we’re so grateful to our network for the time we had,” Marks wrote. “Thank you to everyone who made this journey so special for us. Your tweets, podcasts and intricate conspiracy theories have made it all worthwhile. Fingers crossed that our wonderful studio, MRC, can find a way to keep the dream alive!”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, while the series enjoyed critical success, it failed to garner a wider following and generating under 500,000 total viewers with three days of delayed viewing.
The series starred J.K. Simmons as a bureaucrat at a United Nations-affiliated agency who stumbles the secret to crossing over into a parallel dimension where he finds his counterpart. Nazanin Boniadi, James Cromwell, Betty Gabriel, Harry Lloyd, Olivia Williams and Eme Ikwuakor rounded out the cast.

“Season one gave audiences a taste of the characters and backstory of an upscale New York restaurant, leaving them wanting more — which we will deliver with the second helping of Sweetbitter,” Starz CEO Chris Albrecht said. “The immersion of the audience into the world in and around the restaurant will deepen as the series looks further into the complexities of Tess’ awakening and the lives of her new friends and colleagues in the second season.”
The series follows a 22-year-old woman (Ella Purnell) who, shortly after arriving in New York, lands a job at a celebrated downtown restaurant.
