The second season of The Last of Us recently kicked off production in Vancouver, and its cast is getting better by the day. Danny Ramirez, Ariela Barer, Tati Gabrielle, and Spencer Lord are the latest stars to join the next chapter of HBO’s acclaimed video game adaptation.

Danny Ramirez (Top Gun: Maverick, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) joined Season 2 as Manny, a loyal soldier who tries to hide old wounds with his sunny outlook on life.

Ariela Barer (How To Blow Up a Pipeline, Runaways) will join him as a young doctor Mel, who must face the horrors of war and tribalism, while still staying committed to saving lives.

Tati Gabrielle’s (You, Kaleidoscope) character Nora has been described as a military medic struggling to come to terms with the sins of her past. Spencer Lord (Heartland, Family Law) will portray Owen, a warrior condemned to fight an enemy he refuses to hate.

The second season of The Last of Us was packed with talent even before the four new cast members hopped on board. Kaitlyn Dever, Young Mazino, and Isabela Merced will also join the leading duo Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey in the second season of the post-apocalyptic drama, which is currently filming in Vancouver, Canada.

The Independent Spirit Awards are Hollywood’s biggest celebration of indie cinema, and they returned to Santa Monica on Sunday night. Past Lives walked away with the coveted best feature award, while The Holdovers was the most decorated film of the night with three trophies.

Past Lives faced tough competition in All of Us Strangers, American Fiction, May December, Passages, and We Grown Now, but it managed to beat them all to win the best feature trophy. Celine Song also won an award for directing this film, beating the seasoned directors Todd Haynes and Ira Sachs.

The Holdovers was also one of the biggest winners of the night with a total of three awards. Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Dominic Sessa won awards for best supporting and best breakthrough performance, respectively, while Eigil Bryld collected the trophy for best cinematography.

It was also a night to remember for the team behind American Fiction, which was honored with two awards: best lead performance (Jeffrey Wright) and best screenplay (Cord Jefferson).

Beef was one of the biggest winners of the night on the TV side with two awards, including best new scripted series and best lead performance (Ali Wong). The Last of Us also won two trophies, thanks to the amazing performances by its guest stars Nick Offerman and Keivonn Montreal Woodard.

The 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards took place at the Santa Monica Pier in Santa Monica, California on February 25, with Aidy Bryant hosting the show.

The Creative Arts Emmy Awards did a great job setting the stage for the upcoming Primetime Emmy Awards this past weekend. The list of winners is as impressive as it gets, and it’s led by HBO’s post-apocalyptic drama The Last of Us with eight awards.

The Last of Us scored a total of 19 nominations at this year’s Creative Arts Emmy Awards and managed to walk away with eight of them. Most notably, Nick Offerman and Storm Reid won awards for outstanding guest actor and actress in a drama series for their respective performances.

As if that wasn’t enough, The Last of Us also dominated technical categories, winning awards for outstanding main title design, outstanding prosthetic makeup, outstanding picture editing for a drama series, outstanding sound editing for a comedy or drama series (one hour), outstanding sound mixing for a comedy or drama series (one hour), and outstanding special visual effects in a season or a movie.

The list of major winners also included sports documentary series Welcome to Wrexham with five awards, followed by FX’s The Bear, Apple TV’s Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie, Netflix’s Wednesday, and HBO’s The White Lotus with four each.

The 75th Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards were held over two days on January 6/7 and served as an interlude for the Primetime Emmy Awards on January 15.

The 2020s are proving to be another great era for television, and this year has given us several worthy contenders for the best show of the decade. From HBO’s video game adaptation The Last of Us to Netflix’s wild limited series Beef, we’re bringing you five new shows that 2023 will be remembered by.

The Last of Us

After years of anticipation, fans of the hit video game The Last of Us finally got the worthy adaptation about the journey of the hardened survivor Joel, who must smuggle a teenage girl Ellie across the post-apocalyptic wasteland.

Gen V

Amazon Prime Video has given us one of their biggest hits with the superhero satire The Boys, and its spin-off Gen V centers on a younger generation of supes, trying to do whatever it takes to become members of The Seven.

Poker Face

Knives Out director Rian Johnson joined forces with Natasha Lyonne to create this “case-of-the-week” murder mystery series, which follows a human lie detector Charlie Cale solving crimes across America while on the run from a sinister casino owner.

Beef

Steven Yeun and Ali Wong took us on one wild journey in this series about two strangers who spark a feud that brings out their darkest impulses after a random road rage incident.

Jury Duty

One of the most unique series to launch in recent years, Jury Duty took us into the heart of a fake jury trial. Every step is meticulously planned because everyone taking part is an actor—apart from one juror who’s unaware that the whole thing is a hoax.

2023 has given us more amazing TV performances than we can count—and some of them were delivered by relative unknowns. From Queen Charlotte leads to The Last of Us star Bella Ramsey, we’re bringing you the best breakout stars who graced our TV screens throughout 2023.

Bella Ramsey (The Last of Us)

Bella Ramsey won us over as Lyanna Mormont in Game of Thrones, but the role of Ellie in The Last of Us proved to the world she could carry a whole show on her shoulders and scored her an Emmy nod.

Young Mazino (Beef)

Netflix has given us one of the best-limited series of the year with Beef, and we’re expecting great things from Young Mazino, who played Steven Yeun’s younger brother on the show.

India Amarteifio and Corey Mylchreest (Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story)

India Amarteifio and Corey Mylchreest made us fall in love with the young Queen Charlotte and King George III in this Bridgerton spin-off, and we’re planning to keep an eye on them in the future.

Camila Morrone (Daisy Jones & the Six)

The indie drama Mickey and the Bear put Camila Morrone on the map, but Daisy Jones & the Six marks her first major TV role – and she already has one Emmy nomination to show for it!

Walker Scobell, Leah Sava Jeffries, & Aryan Simhadri (Percy Jackson & the Olympians)

Disney+ wrapped up 2023 by finally sharing Percy Jackson and the Olympians with the world, and we’re predicting a bright future for its leading trio Walker Scobell, Leah Sava Jeffries, and Aryan Simhadri.

Bloys discussed the network’s future programming during Thursday’s presentation in New York City and revealed we’ll have to wait a little longer to see new seasons of their most popular shows. The next season of the Emmy-winning anthology series The White Lotus won’t see the light of day until 2025, and it’s not the only series to experience a major push.

Bloys also said we’ll have to wait until 2025 for the third season of Euphoria, which is certainly the biggest blow given its high school setting. The horror series Welcome to Derry, set in the world of Stephen King’s IT, will also take a little bit longer to finish and is now eying a 2025 release date.

It’s not all bad news, and Bloys confirmed House of the Dragon is returning next summer, in addition to sharing the first Season 2 teaser trailer with the press. He also said that the second season of The Last of Us will kick off production in early 2024, but it’s likely it won’t premiere until 2025.

2023 has truly been a remarkable year for HBO, and the Emmy nominations reflect the network’s enormous success. HBO’s powerhouse dramas Succession, The Last of Us, and The White Lotus are leading the way this year, with over 20 nods each.

Emmy voters were most impressed by the final season of Succession, which scored a total of 27 nods, including 14 in the main categories. The Last of Us is right behind with 24, but only five in the main field. As for The White Lotus, Mike White’s hit series scored 23 nominations, including 12 in the major categories, led by multiple nods for its ensemble cast.

All three shows will compete for the title of best drama this year, where the competition also includes Disney’ Andor, AMC’s Better Call Saul, Netflix’s The Crown, HBO’s House of the Dragon, and Showtime’s Yellowjackets.

The comedy field is equally packed with amazing shows, starting with Ted Lasso, with a total of 21 nods, including the best comedy. The list of contenders for this accolade also includes Abbot Elementary, Barry, The Bear, Jury Duty, Wednesday, Only Murders in the Building, and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

Netflix’s Beef emerged as the most nominated outstanding limited or anthology series, and it will have to beat tough competition in Daisy Jones & The Six, Fleishman Is in Trouble, Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, and Obi-Wan Kenobi.

The 75th Primetime Emmy Awards are set to return on September 18, but the date could’ve been changed in the face of the ongoing WGA strike.

The Last of Us is one of HBO’s biggest productions in recent memory and they’re betting big on this post-apocalyptic show. Just a few episodes into the first season, the critically acclaimed video game adaptation has already been renewed for Season 2.

The Last of Us draws inspiration from Naughty Dog’s award-winning video game, and it received a lot of praise for being faithful to the source material. It centers on a hardened survivor Joel (Pedro Pascal), who’s been hired to smuggle a teenage girl Ellie (Bella Ramsey) out of an oppressive quarantine zone and across the post-apocalyptic United States.

In addition to Pascal and Ramsey, the show also stars Gabriel Luna, Anna Torv, Nico Parker, Murray Bartlett, Nick Offerman, Melanie Lynskey, and Storm Reid.

The game’s author Neil Druckmann, who co-created its TV adaptation with Craig Mazin, thanked the fans for supporting the show and said it’s the absolute pleasure to bring it back for Season 2.

“I’m humbled, honored, and frankly overwhelmed that so many people have tuned in and connected with our retelling of Joel and Ellie’s journey. The collaboration with Craig Mazin, our incredible cast & crew, and HBO exceeded my already high expectations,” said Druckmann in a statement.

The Last of Us is one of the most highly-anticipated video game adaptations in recent memory, and we won’t have to wait for it much longer. The dystopian show is coming to HBO in about a month and the network gave us a taste of things to come with a new trailer.

The Last of Us is set in a post-apocalyptic, dystopian future, 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed. It follows hardened survivor Joel (Pedro Pascal), as he tries to smuggle a 14-year-old girl Ellie (Bella Ramsey) out of an oppressive quarantine zone.

The duo meats many other survivors on their brutal and heartbreaking journey across what’s left of the United States. The show’s supporting cast includes Gabriel Luna, Anna Torv, Nico Parker, Murray Bartlett, Nick Offerman, Melanie Lynskey, and Storm Reid.

The series was filmed in Alberta from the summer of 2021 to the summer of 2022, under the watchful eye of Chornobyl’s Craig Mazin and the game creator Neil Druckmann, who serve as showrunners. It marks the largest television production in Canadian history, generating an estimated CA$200 million in revenue for Alberta.

The Last of Us will premiere on January 15, 2023 and the showrunners are open to working on more seasons if the first chapter is well-received.

The ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike impacted the future of countless upcoming TV shows, including some of HBO’s biggest hits. The network’s CEO Casey Bloys officially confirmed some of their hit series won’t return until 2025, including Euphoria and The White Lotus.
