]]>According to the film’s official synopsis, Mufasa: The Lion King will be told in flashbacks, and it will introduce Mufasa as an orphaned cub, who’s lost and alone until he finds a kindred soul in a sympathetic lion named Taka.
“The chance meeting sets in motion an expansive journey of an extraordinary group of misfits searching for their destiny – their bonds will be tested as they work together to evade a threatening and deadly foe,” reads Disney’s logline.
Aaron Pierre will lead the voice cast as Mufasa, and he’ll be joined by Aaron Pierre, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Tiffany Boone, Mads Mikkelsen, Thandiwe Newton, and Lennie James. Donald Glover, Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, John Kani, and Beyoncé will reprise their roles from the previous film, and they’ll be joined by Beyoncé’s daughter Blue Ivy Carter.
Mufasa: The Lion King was directed by the Oscar winner Barry Jenkins, and it embraces the same photorealistic animated style as The Lion King remake. It will be released just in time for Christmas, on December 20.

]]>The iconic singer-songwriter, who co-wrote the original film’s songs, tells British GQ that he’s disappointed with the new iteration’s music.
“The new version of The Lion King was a huge disappointment to me because I believe they messed the music up,” he said. “Music was so much a part of the original and the music in the current film didn’t have the same impact. The magic and joy were lost. The soundtrack hasn’t had nearly the same impact in the charts that it had 25 years ago when it was the bestselling album of the year. The new soundtrack fell out of the charts so quickly, despite the massive box-office success.”
John also expressed his desire to have been more involved in the project.
“I wish I’d been invited to the party more, but the creative vision for the film and its music was different this time around and I wasn’t really welcomed or treated with the same level of respect. That makes me extremely sad. I’m so happy that the right spirit for the music lives on with the Lion King stage musical.”
The news Lion King hauled more than $1 billion worldwide.

]]>While the realistic depiction of the animals became clear in the trailer, this becomes even more apparent upon watching the full feature. The animals are so realistic that at times you will likely forget that what you are watching is digital animation. This makes the violence more real and the hungry hyenas even more frightening than the Disney original. Regardless of your overall opinion of the film, it’s difficult to deny that the team has done an incredible job of bringing our favorite Disney characters to life.
The trouble is, the animal characters are so realistic that something is lost in the remake. There is something ever so slightly unsettling about the talking lions and an element of emotion is lost. Every hair on Simba’s mane beckons you to reach out and touch it, and yet the pain on his face when he says goodbye to his father is less convincing. It seems a little ironic that the film’s success in being so visually stunning is ultimately what detracts from the original’s charm.
In terms of the storyline, the 2019 version is darker and more Shakesperean. Nonetheless, there are some uplifting and hilarious moments, mostly in the form of Timon and Pumba. Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner do a fantastic job portraying the comedic duo and their rendition of Hakuna Matata is one of the most charming moments of the ordeal.
Ultimately though, Disney’s commitment to remaking all their old catalog with realistic live-action characters is yet to be justified. While a sense of realism is gained, a sense of wonder and charm is lost. What makes Disney so special is its ability to take us into a magical world where childhood never dies. By making their films more realistic, this charm and magic are stifled and the overwhelming power to the delight of the original “Lion King” feature is lost.

“The concept of the video is to show how God is the painter, and natural beauty in nature needs no art direction. It’s the beauty of color, the beauty of melanin, the beauty of tradition,” said Beyoncé.

Beyoncé gave us a taste of things to come with her new song “Spirit”, but this album has so much more in store. She described it as “sonic cinema” and “new experience of storytelling”, and promised a mixture of different musical styles.
“I wanted to do more than find a collection of songs that were inspired by the film. It is a mixture of genres and collaboration that isn’t one sound. It is influenced by everything from R&B, pop, hip hop and Afro Beat,” said Beyoncé in an official statement.
