Ridley finally confirmed her return during a surprise appearance at the Star Wars Celebration in London. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy will direct the first new film starring Ridley, while Dave Filoni and James Mangold are on board to helm the next two.

Ridley said she’s “very thrilled to be continuing this journey”, and her return doesn’t come as a huge shocker. Back in February, she discussed her Star Wars future with The Hollywood Reporter and said she would be open to the idea of playing Ray again.

News that Waititi will direct from a script co-written by himself and 1917’s co-scribe Krysty Wilson-Cairns was announced by Disney and Lucasfilm on Monday.

Per Variety, it is unclear if Waititi’s film is one of Disney’s previously annoneced three untitled Star Wars movies dated for December 2022, 2024 and 2026, or if it’s a separate project.

It was announced that Disney hired the duo to work on the next Star Wars installment, due to be released in 2022.

Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed their involvement during the MoffettNathanson Media and Communications Summit: “We’re hard at work already, but we felt three years was the proper amount of time to not only take a breather and reset but to gear up for the next film’s release. We did a deal with David Benioff and Dan Weiss, and the next movie that we release will be theirs,” said Iger.

This film will hit the theaters on December 16, 2022, and it will be the first in the series of three new entries into the franchise. The next two sequels are set to be released in 2024 and 2026, and their plot is still under wraps.

Rumors of a Star Wars standalone movie centered on Boba Fett surfaced back in May. But while neither Disney nor Lucasfilm officially announced the project, Variety confirms that the project is unofficially no longer in development. 

The film centered on the galactic bounty hunter was supposed to be helmed by Logan director James Mangold. Boba Fett debuted in 1980’s Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and re-appeared in 1983’s Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.

The company is currently focusing on its Star Wars streaming TV series The Mandalorian from Jon Favreau. Favreau teased plot details on Instagram, “After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars’ universe,” read his post. “The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.”

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, The CEO of Disney, Bob Iger, has said that they are going to be more careful about “volume and timing” when it comes to realizing new Star Wars movies. His comments follow the failure of the most recent Star Wars movie Solo which missed its targets by $30million.

Igor said: “I made the timing decision, and as I look back, I think the mistake that I made – I take the blame –  was a little too much, too fast. You can expect some slowdown, but that doesn’t mean we’re not going to make films.”

He continued: “J.J. [Abrams] is busy making [Episode] IX… we are just at the point where we’re going to start making decisions about what comes next after J.J.’s. But I think we’re going to be a little bit more careful about volume and timing. And the buck stops here on that.”

One of the most popular theories for the recent Star Wars flop was ‘audience fatigue’. Disney has released two spin-offs since 2016 in addition to Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Episode IX of the franchise is due for release at the end of 2019.
