With $1.496 billion grossed worldwide, this is the highest-grossing of Cruise’s career and the second-highest-grossing film of 2022 behind James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water. It’s also been nominated for six Academy Awards, including best picture.

The first film tells the story of public relations officer William Cage, who’s stuck in a time loop fighting alien invaders after being killed in combat. He comes across skilled warrior Rita Vrataski, who agrees to help him improve his fighting skills so they could defeat the extraterrestrial invaders.

Edge of Tomorrow starred Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, who are both expected to return for the sequel, along with director Doug Liman. Nothing is confirmed just yet, but Liman seemed to be pretty enthusiastic about the potential sequel the last time he discussed the possibility of it.

“Tom and I sat down with Christopher McQuarrie, who was one of the writers of the original, and suddenly started hatching a story that I loved more than the original, which I never thought possible,” said Liman.

Matthew Robinson was in charge of writing the screenplay this time around, but it’s still unclear when we can expect it to hit the theaters.

Cruise tweeted a short video of the franchise’s iconic “M:I” logo with two fuses burning toward the letters. He captioned the video with “Summer 2021 and Summer 2022.” McQuarrie simply tweeted, “Missions: Accepted #MissionImpossible.”

McQuarrie is no stranger to the MI franchise or to working with Cruise. The filmmaker directed the last to movies in the series, Rogue Nation and Fallout who hauled $682.7 and $791.1 respectively in the global box office. He also previously worked with Cruise on the 2012 thriller Jack Reacher.

Despite praising the actor’s acting chops, Child had to admit Cruise didn’t have the physicality to play the part. Fans of his novels often complained he was too short, and the author finally admitted they were onto something.

The 58-year-old actor will reprise his iconic role as Tom “Iceman” Karzansky in the sequel of the 1986 classic Top Gun. Kilmer will be starring opposite Tom Cruise who is reprising his character Pete “Maverick” Mitchell.

Cruise has confirmed that production has begun on the sequel, tweeting a photo from day one of production. The picture shows Cruise’s character in uniform with the words “Feel the need” over the image, a reference to one of the most famous lines from the original film.

The sequel was given an official fo last year with Cruise telling the hosts of Australia’s Sunrise morning show. “You know what? I’m going to start filming it probably in the next year. It’s happening. It is definitely happening.”

Set in present day, the new movie will follow the fighter pilot duo as they battle with drone tech that is making their old style of flying obsolete.

But the actor missed the mark and slammed into the building, thus injuring himself in the process. Crew members immediately rushed to his aid as he hobbled around the set, according to E! News.

The 55-year-old actor likes doing his own stunts. “Whatever I can do to really put the audience in the scene with the character and in the movie, that’s what I want, so whatever it takes,” Cruise said to E! News in 2015. “Whatever it takes! I prefer to do everything live in camera. I think that…Look, CGI, we’re lucky to have it because it’s a tool, just like practical stunts are a tool. And it takes everyone. It takes a village making these movies. They’re incredible, top to bottom, these guys.”

At the time, Cruise, who has played Ethan Hunt since the first movie in 1996, joked that he’ll continue to star in Mission: Impossible franchise until he’s 90 years old.  “They’ll be throwing me out of planes in my wheelchair at that point,” he said. “So, whatever it takes, we’ll keep going!”

That same year, the action star revealed why he’s always been willing to take big risks on the movies. “For different films, whether it’s an action movie or not, making a movie is very demanding,” he said. “I’m constantly training for one thing or the other.”
